LOTR Movies : Characters & Actors - All in the Family - Relatives of Cast & Crew

Peter Jackson in the FOTR audio commentary says during the Long Expected Party: "A big scene like the Hobbit party, is one of those scenes when you get all of your friends and family to come along to be extras. Itís a lot of fun: they get to wear funny clothes and wigs, and thereís quite a few of our family involved in this scene."

I think family members of cast and crew were given opportunities throughout the three movies to appear on screen or at least participate (if not featured onscreen) in the filming process.

Below is what I know about these appearances.

Royd Tolkien - great-grandson of J.R.R. Tolkien, author of "The Lord of the Rings"

Royd played a Gondorian Ranger (uncredited but otherwise confirmed), ROTK, Orc raid on Osgiliath.

LA Times: copy of article by Royd Tolkien (I can't find this article on the LA Times site)

Billy Jackson - son of Peter Jackson, producer, writer, and director & Fran Walsh, producer and writer

Billy was in all three movies, always appearing next to his sister, Katie.

FOTR: credited as "Cute Hobbit Child", Long Expected Party

TTT: credited as "Cute Rohan Refugee Child", Crystal Caves behind Helm's Deep

ROTK: credited as "Featured Child", Gondorian child watching Faramir leave the city and also, perhaps, a Hobbit child at Sam and Rosie's wedding.

Katie Jackson - daughter of Peter Jackson & Fran Walsh

Katie was in all three movies, always appearing next to her brother, Billy.

FOTR: credited as "Cute Hobbit Child", Long Expected Party

TTT: credited as "Cute Rohan Refugee Child", Glittering  Caves behind Helm's Deep

ROTK: credited as "Featured Child", Gondorian child watching Faramir leave the city and also, perhaps, a Hobbit child at Sam and Rosie's wedding.

Tom - uncle of Fran Walsh, producer and writer

Tom played Fatty Bolger (uncredited but otherwise confirmed), Long Expected Party

identified by Peter Jackson in FOTR directors/writer's commentary: "Thatís Franís Uncle Tom again, shaking Ian Holmís hand"

Calum Gittins - son of Philippa Boyens, writer

Calum played Haleth, son of HŠma, (credited), TTT, Helm's Deep

Calum's voice deppened before ADR was done and another boy actor had to supply the voice

Hannah Wood - sister of Elijah Wood, actor, "Frodo"

Hannah played a Rohan Refugee extra (uncredited but otherwise confirmed), TTT, Crystal Caves

identified by Peter Jackson in TTT directors/writer's commentary: "This is Elijah Wood's sister that you're seeing on screen here with the blond hair just walking past the camera. She came to visit the set, one day, down here in New Zealand and we made sure we got her as a featured Rohan extra."

Alexandra Astin - daughter of Sean Astin, actor, "Sam Gamgee"

Alexandra played Elanor Gamgee (credited), daughter of Sam and Rosie, ROTK, "Well, I'm back."

Henry Mortensen - son of Viggo Mortensen, actor, "Aragorn"

Henry had three extra roles (not credited but otherwise confirmed)

Rohirrim boy conscript, TTT, Helm's Deep - confirmed by Peter Jackson in ROTK audio commentary and Viggo in comments made in 2003

Orc - Viggo's account and Peter's comment in the audio commentary seem conflicting, to me as to which orc Henry played. Peter says: the first orc Aragorn killed on the Pelennor Fields. Viggo says: an orc that ultimately killed by Gimli.

Gondorian Soldier, Black Gate - confirmed by Viggo's comment and Premiere Magazine article - I've looked through footage and can't identify his character.

Maisy McLeod-Riera - daughter of Sarah McLeod, actress, Rosie Cotton-Gamgee

Maisy played Sam and Rosie's second child (credited), "Baby Gamgee", ROTK, "I'm back."

In the book, Sam and Rosie's second child was a boy named Frodo.

Bret & Justin McKenzie - sons of Peter McKenzie, actor, "Elendil"

Bret was an elf in the Council of Elrond - (uncredited but otherwise confirmed as being an elf extra). He was part of Arwen's Elven escort in ROTK and credited as "Elf Escort".

In a USA Today article, Bret said Justin was an elf "for one second" but does not identify the scene. Assorted fan sites identify him as being in the Council of Elrond. I can't find stronger confirmation as to what scene he was in.

Sadwyn Brophy - son of Jed Brophy, actor, "Sharku" / "Snaga"

Sadwyn played Eldarion (credited), future daughter of Arwen and Aragorn.

Since we don't see Jed's face, I included thumbs of the two Orc characters he played.
