| Cheering Hobbits | |||||||||||||||
|
As Bilbo greets the Hobbits at the Long Expected Party, the screen shows cheering Hobbits as family names are called out. "Bagginses and Boffins" : a fairly close shot of Frodo "Tooks and Brandybucks" : No specific grouping is shown "Bolgers" : a fairly close shots of a group cheering and raising their mugs. "Grubbs" : a fairly close shots of a group cheering and raising their mugs. "Chubbs" : a fairly close shots of a group cheering and raising their glasses. Not everyone raises their mugs. You can see a mug being raised by an arm off screen (to the group's right from their perspective) "Hornblowers" : a fairly close shot of a family group cheering and I think one member is raising his glass out of camera range. "Bracegirdles" : a wide shot of the entire party - people scattered throughout the party are cheering. In fact, I believe this is the same shot, from a different camera, that we see after "Chubbs" is called out. "Proudfeet" : a fairly close shot of Everard I think a cursory effort was made to identify some Hobbits by family name. It's hard to tell if the intention was that family groups were sitting together but not all cheered when their name was called out or if members of each family are scattered throughout the party and only those cheering during any shot are from that family. I say 'cursory effort' because the fact they used the same moment after Chubbs are called as after Bracegirdles are called means they weren't not being 100% consistent. (since the same people are cheering after each name) |

Hobbit child at wedding |
|||||||||||||||
![]() |
I've seen fan speculation that two of the Hobbit children at Sam and Rosie's wedding are Billy and Katie Jackson, the children of Fran Walsh and Peter Jackson. In FOTR and TTT, the two are credited somewhat specifically as "Hobbit children" and "Rohan Refugees". In ROTK, they are credited more generally as "Featured Children". It makes some sense that this could be because they were in two scenes as two races (Gondorian children and Hobbit children). I also think two of the children at the wedding do look a little like Katie and Billy but I can't find any official confirmation that they were in this scene. |

Various bios for Philippa mention her children. Philippa's son, Calum Gittins, played Haleth (a Rohirrim lad) and was credited as such. Some also mention that Phoebe played a Hobbit. I can not determine which Hobbit she played. |

Taea is not in the movie credits but is freely credited elsewhere as a Hobbit Child in FOTR. It's not clear to me which child she is. |

| Matamata Extras | |||||||||||||||
|
Peter Jackson in the FOTR audio commentary says during "Concerning Hobbits": Hobbiton is a location in Matamata, in the North Island of New Zealand, [...] All of our Hobbit extras were gathered from the local farming community at Matamata; we just looked for the best hobbit-faces we could, because we knew, kind of, what Hobbits should look like: they had to be sort of short and squat, and have large eyes and round faces. |

Peter Jackson in the FOTR audio commentary says during the Long Expected Party: "I know that there’s a shot of Fran’s uncle, Tom – there he is there, that’s Fran’s uncle (Fatty Bolger shakes hands with Bilbo) – and my cousin Jill pops up at some stage around here. " So presumably Jill is visible after Fatty and Bilbo shake hands. |
|||||||||||||||
| Family and Friends | |||||||||||||||
| Peter Jackson in the FOTR audio commentary says during the Long Expected Party: "A big scene like the Hobbit party, is one of those scenes when you get all of your friends and family to come along to be extras. It’s a lot of fun: they get to wear funny clothes and wigs, and there’s quite a few of our family involved in this scene." | |||||||||||||||
| Decipher Collectible Card Game (CCG) is a collectible card game that involves large quantities of cards depicting various characters, objects, locations, attributes and events. Many of the cards for the LOTR CCG used characters seen in the movie and most of those cards identify the characters by a 'name'. I don't know who decided on these names. Most of these character names (for bit roles) are not included in the movies' credits. Was it just Decipher people? Did Weta name them (they were involved to some extent in the production of images for the cards)? Did the writers of the movie (Peter, Philippa and Fran) have some say in on how characters (unnamed in the movie's credits) were named? I don't know. Additionally, there have been some discrepancies in names between the cards and the movies. Therefore, I think it's important to understand that any name provided by a Decipher Card can only be given limited credence. | |||||||||||||||
