The cue by cue pages contain
information about the regular (OST) or limited edition
(LE)
soundtrack CDs*.
Each page has the
following sections (as applicable):
TRACK LENGTH &
GENERAL SCENE DESCRIPTION
CUE BY CUE: this is
a moment by moment description of the music and
how it fits with scenes from the movie. It looks
like this:

Rivendell Theme
over a distant view of Rivendell with an Elven Rider in the
foreground. Cut to Frodo’s reunion with Sam then Merry and Pippin. |

Time stamps in
the left column correspond with the track's
progress. Included in this section are
-
THEMES heard
during the track - these names are links
that will take you to that theme's page. If
you have not visited that page yet, the link
looks like this.
Once you have visited the page, it looks
like this.
-
LYRICS sung
during the track. These are in
green.
-
GREY LINES:
When the action of the screen is not
continuous, I've inserted a grey line. The
scenes before and after the grey line are
not contiguous with each other in the
movie... or the music before or after the
grey line is not in the movie.
SOURCE TEXT
INFORMATION: this identifies the source text for
any singing heard in the track. The name is a
link that will take you to that source text's
page. On that page, you can find the full source
text, other places that text was used, and
information regarding language, translation,
composer, author, artists, etc. It looks like
this:
DETAILED TIME
STAMP INFO FOR LYRICS: this section is for the
fan who wants to sing along. I have this
information for many of the 'songs' on the
soundtrack but not all. The times stamps on the
Cue by Cue pages are for the regular/special
edition soundtracks. The times stamps for the
Complete Recordings have their
own page. Of course, only the CR-FOTR
& CR-TTT are out at the moment. For songs sung
in ROTK
that are not on the regular/special edition CDs,
detailed time stamps, when available, are on the
page for their source text. You just have to dig
through the Source Songs by visiting the
SITE MAP.
NOTES: These give
more information on some aspect of the
information on the page. Often, it is a
speculation or information as to what a piece of unused music
might have been intended for. In a few cases,
towards the end of the ROTK Cue by Cues, I made
some personal notes about finishing this aspect
of my site.
LINKS TO OTHER
TRACKS: If you're moving through the soundtrack,
you could use the PREV. (previous) or NEXT
buttons or just click on another track for that
same movie CD.
*Regular or Limited
Edition (LE) soundtrack CDs: this refers to the CDs
sold with the release of each movie. The regular CDs
were around $15 US. The Special Edition CDs were
released pretty much at the same time and cost more.
Their leatherette packaging is slightly larger than
the regular CD. Aside from some slightly expanded
liner notes, the two FOTR CDs are the same. TTT LE
CD had one more track, Farewell to Lórien, that
contained music mostly heard in FOTR. ROTK LE had an
extra DVD that had information about the soundtrack
in general and a super trailer. Since I have
included that one extra track from TTT LE CD, I feel
the need to say 'regular and special edition'. But
'special edition' should not be confused with the
Complete
Recordings. These sets are considerably more
expensive, around $50 US. The CR-FOTR contained 3
CDs and 1DVD and the packaging is much thicker than
the regular/LE CDs. The musical content is developed
from the entire movie. The Annotated Score (a
free download from the official soundtrack site)
contains information along the lines of
what I do for the regular CD. Doug Adams does not
provide time stamps with explicit scene
descriptions, but his discussion of the music is
more complete. Even if you don't have the Complete
Recordings, the Annotated Scores make a good
accompaniment to the OSTs and the movies themselves.

compares to the CR-ROTK, download
