We hear the Pity of Gollum as Gollum climbs up on railing to get a better look at the Fellowship. Gandalf and Frodo discuss Gollum and the pity of Bilbo.

The Pity of Gollum theme ends with two minor notes as Gandalf asks Frodo if he could deal out death and give life. "Can you give it to them?"

The Dwarrowdelf Theme (and voices) ends as the Fellowship round a corner and see an open door into a room. (Which we learn is Balin's tomb.)

A crescendo leads into an urgent phrase lead by strings, then answered by horns. The action has jumped ahead and the Fellowship is barring the door to Balin’s tomb to keep out approaching Orcs. The music becomes more fevered as the Fellowship wait while the Orcs pound the door.

One last screeching crescendo on the violin and horns and drums take over the music. It becomes more pounding. As holes are made in the door, Legolas and Aragorn begin firing arrows.

The music reaches a peak as the door collapses.
