Below are links to clips for 8
scenes. The first set is from a CD and
the second from the movie. Each clip below contains just a
phrase of music
and they are very short... under
15 seconds. (and between 100-250 KB each)
For hearing similarities, I think
it's actually easier to listen to shorter
clips.
But for the purposes of thinking
more deeply about and discussing the music, longer
clips may be more useful. If you would like longer clips, you can
use time
stamps to cue up your own CDs

The Challenge:
After identifying the scene,
think about what this music has in common. (And if you haven't
listened to the longer clips yet, you may want to.)
I will tell you up front, it is a
theme representing a person, place or concept. But, even though it
is prevalent throughout the three movies, it is the least
melodically consistently. Iterations of the Seduction Theme or the
Rivendell Theme always sound pretty similar. This one... not so
much. If you've identified most of the scenes, I think you'll have
your answer. As the clips progress 1-8, they get less connected to
the theme. The latter ones are described by Doug Adams as 'being
informed' by the theme in question. |
