Gollum's Menace

A Theme for Gollum

MENACE OF GOLLUM, a theme for Gollum, is played on the cimbalom (a type of hammered dulcimer) which gives it a jittery effect.

Historically, this theme has also been called Stinker, Gollum's Theme, and Menace of Gollum.

Places this theme is heard in TTT:

  • As Gollum creeps down the rock face in Emyn Muil, hoping to surprise the 'sleeping' Hobbits.

  • As Gollum 'meets' Sting.  Frodo threatens to cut his throat if he doesn't release the choke hold he has on Sam.

  • As Gollum sprints off to lead the Hobbits to the Black Gate.

  • During the 'argument' between Sméagol and Gollum after they leave Osgiliath. Gollum reminds Sméagol that Frodo tricked them (in Henneth Annûn).

Places this theme is heard in ROTK:

  • As Gollum and Sméagol discuss their options while gazing in a lake.

  • Similar to the first instance of this theme, a quiet, sneaky version is heard as Gollum takes the Lembas from Sam's pack and disposes of it..
